“I
will say without the slightest degree of hesitation, that Miss Kelly
is
one of the best female jazz singers that I have ever heard, bar
none....I repeat, bar none…”

"Well, Alright!" - Nancy Kelly with guest Houston
Person
(who appears courtesy of High Note Records)
Nancy Kelly
continues to dazzle audiences with her take-no-prisoners,
back-to-the-roots swinging style. In a market place where wispy voices
and shallow emotions abound, Ms. Kelly is a breath of fresh air. She
takes
us back to the time when jazz – and that includes vocal jazz --
was an
authentic expression of real emotion.
In “Well, Alright!” her second outing
with High Note recording artist tenor
saxophonist Houston Person, (their first was “Born to
Swing” in 2006), Nancy
shows off her blues and soul chops (she’s already
proved she can swing!).
This collection of old and “new” (from the 60’s
rather that the 30’s) standards was recorded over a weekend in November
2008 at Bake’s Place, a Seattle area
jazz club, and has all the
excitement and warmth inherent in a live performance.
“As I sat in the audience at Bake’s for
this recording session seeing Nancy Kelly in person for the first time,
I was curious about what this singer had to offer. After her first
notes hit me, I smiled, settled back, relaxed and let myself be
transported into a genuine, top notch, musical experience. For two
hours I soared with her, cried with her, laughed with her, scatted with
her, agonized with her, and fell hook, line and sinker for her voice and
her interpretation of so many great songs. She’s both old school and
new. She’s experienced, yet her delivery and ideas are fresh. She can
take a song and turn it up or down, and leave you believing that it was
meant to be exactly that way. It takes greatj azz chops to do that, and
Kelly’s are superb.”” - from liner notes, Dick Bogle, Jazz

REVIEW COMMENTS
"Kelly is right in the pocket with a return to the last hurrah of the
golden age of
broads, the 60s, when supper clubs still roamed the earth
and were populated by
swinging kitties that knew how to take a song and
a room on their own terms in
high style...She understands white
space and laying out to let her cats swing as
well. A dandy throwback
vocal date from a pro that keeps proving her chops with
each new
session. Hot stuff."
-- Chris Spector, Midwest Record

"an electric performance, one that underlines the praise prompted from
me by her
first CD ("Born To Swing"). This time, Nancy has a different
backing trio: Randy
Halberstadt on piano, Jeff Johnson on bass and Gary
Hobbs on drums. She is, however, again joined by tenor saxophonist
Houston Person, whose biting take on the blues is a special joy. Just as
joyful is Nancy's singing voice. She has a similarly biting approach to
some of the lyrics, curtailing some words in the interest of the dynamic
swing she imparts. There are also many occasions throughout this wholly
admirable set when she sets the spine a-tingling in a way that so few of
today's singers can manage. Run, don't walk for this one."

"I love her interpretation of so
many great songs. She's both old school and new. She's
experienced yet her delivery and ideas are fresh,. she has great
jazz chops and sings with a pure honesty."-- Dick Bogle, Jazz

"Nancy is certainly on
top of all the 11 standards here. This 2008 performance is from
Seattle's Bake's Place and couldn't be a better showcase for her.
"But Not For Me" (Gershwins) swings to and fro in a way that you have
never heard before.
"Who Can I Turn To?" (Bricusse/Newley) is earnestly
sung to the hilt. Nancy brings forth much of her vocal tenderness. Houston Person plays a remarkable tenor solo midway that will make you
hit the replay button. Oh yes and watch for a spectacular final
unbelievable vocal high note. For "I Love Being Here With You," (Schluger/Lee)
Nancy and Houston are like one in this merry swingfest. This take has a
wonderful all out moving rhythm that is bound to excite you enough to
move and take off on the dance floor. Ms. Kelly rocks the joint till
there isn't anything left. "Let's Fall In Love" (Koehler/Arlen) is
performed to perfection. Houston and Nancy sound great toge4ther on this
rhythmic toe-tapping standard. "Fine and Mellow" (Holiday) blues
singing at its best plus complementary good rocking by Houston
throughout."
